Xingu Indian Maloka
Longhouse
Interior of a Xingu Indian maloka. The maloka or long house is the
primary living quarters for indigenous people living in villages inside of the
Xingu Indigenous Park. Some malokas are very large and up to 100 people
can live inside of a single dwelling. Note the large flutes leaning on
poles to the left of the photograph. These giant flutes are used in the
ritual of the flutes which is a common indigenous ceremony shared by various
tribes living in the Xingu River Basin.
